3 Healthy Habits That Are Good For Your Brain
Healthy habits aren’t only good for your physical appearance and stamina, they are essential for your brain to function efficiently.
It goes without saying that we want our brains to function efficiently, but have you considered the impact your brain’s capacity has on your ability to realize your full potential?
To realize your full potential, you’re probably going to have to make a major life change. With a major life change comes all kinds of challenging emotions that are going to be very hard to deal with if you’re not giving your brain what it needs.
Here are 3 things it needs:
- Exercise! Exercise increases the neurotransmitters — chemical messengers — in your brain, improves your attention, and actually strengthens the centers in your brain responsible for emotional responses. According to Wendy Suzuki, professor of neuroscience, the best type of exercise is aerobic activity that increases your heart rate for 30 minutes 3-4 times/week.
- Food! You need to balance your macronutrients — fats, proteins, and carbs. You need good fatty acids, plenty of protein, and low glycemic carbs. There’s a link below to a post that includes more detail and good sources of each macronutrient.
- Sleep! Did you know that your brain uses 20% – 25% of your body’s entire energy supply? And this produces a lot of waste. Did you know that the only time your brain can eliminate this waste is when you are asleep? Sleep is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
