3 Tools Proven to
Help You Stay Motivated
Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Bad news? Alright. There’s no shortcut to staying motivated, truly motivated. Regardless of what you may have heard before, there are not 5 simple steps to follow.
The good news is — if you’re willing to put in the work, you can learn how to stay motivated. And I’m going to give you 3 tools today that will work if you intentionally decide that you want them to.
How do I know they work? They’re the tools I use myself, and I use each one every day, in one way or another. So, without further ado.
- You have to believe you are worth it. Why would you ever stay motivated to achieve something that you don’t think you deserve? Or, why would you focus on improving yourself if you don’t think you’re worth the trouble. You will use the first tool to face your ego so that you can recognize your self-worth. That tool can be found here — The Simplest Way to Conquer Your Greatest Enemy — an educational post and free worksheet.
- You have to take care of your body. It’s going to be awfully difficult to stay motivated for very long if you’re weak, tired, hungry, or lacking nutrients. You’re going to be constantly distracted by your longings for sleep, food, or pain relief. The second tool is going to help you develop some manageable steps to create self-care habits. That tool can be found here — How to Energize Yourself Before Taking That Leap of Faith — another educational post and free worksheet.
- You have to define and own your Why — the reason you want to stay motivated to accomplish whatever it is you want to accomplish. Your Why has to be meaningful and has to be tailored to your needs and values. The third tool is going to help you develop your why until it’s such a part of you that you own it. That tool can be found here — Own Your “Why” – 5 Simple Steps — you guessed it, you’ll find an educational post and free worksheet.

What Keeps Me Motivated?
I’ve always been a self-motivated person, which is something that I’m extremely grateful for. But, even if you aren’t naturally self-motivated, it’s a skill you can learn. Maybe these thoughts can get you started.
What keeps me motivated? I have always been more afraid of regret than taking action. As soon as I start giving myself excuses as to why I can’t do something, I lay a guilt trip on myself. This sounds bad, but it goes back to showing yourself tough love, which I talked about in a separate post.
It’s not a, “If you don’t do this, you’re just proving that you’re a worthless person,” kind of guilt trip. It’s, “If you don’t do X, you are going to regret it, and the regret is going to last much longer than the discomfort of doing X.” That’s tough love, and that’s intentional living!
