How to Make Amends With
Your Emotional Triggers
Emotional triggers — we all have them, right? Those people, places, or things that release strong, negative emotions within us. And, you’ve probably noticed how quickly your emotional triggers can take control of your thoughts, actions, and, ultimately, your reality.
So, how do you prevent that from happening? How do you maintain control over your thoughts and actions? You learn to make amends with your emotional triggers.
But, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves a little. Maybe we need to back up a minute and identify some common signs that you have been emotionally triggered, to make sure that we’re talking about the same thing here.
You’ll know that an emotional trigger’s been pushed if you find yourself:
- Overreacting.
- Acting in a way that is out of character for you.
- Provoking someone.
- Forming a strong opinion about something/someone you have little knowledge of.
- Worrying about the future or lamenting the past.
Do any of these signs sound familiar to you? Of course they do because we’ve all experienced these natural reactions, which are caused by an undeniable part of your body. A part of your body that you may not even be aware of. And, understanding this part of your body is the first step toward making amends with your emotional triggers.
Keep scrolling to find out what this undeniable part of you is.
The Key to Making Amends With
Your Emotional Triggers
So, what part of your body is the culprit behind your emotional triggers? Your pain-body! Huh? What the heck is that?
You’ve probably heard the term “emotional baggage” before, right? That’s another way of saying pain-body — pain-body just sounds a bit more sophisticated. ?
Pain-body is a term coined by the spiritual teacher, Eckart Tolle, who describes the pain-body as:
The remnants of pain left behind by every strong negative emotion that is not fully faced, accepted, and then let go of [that] join together to form an energy field that lives in the very cells of your body. . . . The energy field of old but still very-much-alive emotion that lives in almost every human being is the pain-body.
And these “old but still very-much-alive” emotions are the ones that you need to make amends with in order to make amends with your emotional triggers.
How do you go about making amends with these emotions? Well, you’ve just taken your first steps!
- You’ve identified a few signs that your emotions have been triggered. Now, you just need to practice recognizing the signs in the moment so you can maintain control of the situation.
- You’ve gained a preliminary understanding of the cause of your emotional triggers — your pain body — and this knowledge will also empower you to maintain control of your thoughts and actions.
