A Bold New Way to
Identify Your Core Values
The longer I focus on my personal development, the more I realize that identifying your core values is THE foundation of all personal development.
So, yes, I’m going to talk about identifying core values . . . again! ? Because I truly believe that anyone who is serious about personal development and serious about becoming a Deliberate Thinker has to identify their core values to make any headway.
I was in a YouTube rabbit hole yesterday, and I came across a video of Jordan Peterson being interviewed by Joe Rogan. They discussed one thing in particular that triggered an aha moment for me.
This aha moment pointed out something that I had to admit to myself. Something that I’m not proud of but that I now realize is elicited by my core values.
And, if you are bold enough to admit your “thing” to yourself, you might find a clue that will lead you to discover your core values.
Keep scrolling to find out what my “thing” is.
Concluding Thoughts
My “thing” is that I can be a bit of a cognitive elitist. (A term Jordan Peterson used in the video I referred to.) In other words, I have a natural tendency to think I’m better than someone who isn’t intellectual, who doesn’t care to understand the world, or who otherwise seems shallow or superficial to me.
I don’t like this about myself, but there it is. I could list many reasons for this tendency of mine, but I think it might be directly correlated to my core values.
My core values are authenticity and growth. Which means that I strongly believe in personal development, consistent improvement, and Deliberate Thinking. And I think that’s why I have a natural bias against people who don’t seem to value those things.
So there’s your life hack. Identify the traits you are naturally biased against. What are some of your pet peeves? What types of people do you have a hard time relating to, and why?
What’s an undeniable truth about yourself that you’re not necessarily proud of? Could it be an indicator of your core values? Be bold enough to be honest with yourself, and you might just be surprised. ?
