A Simple Way to
Create Your Own Luck
I watched a video this morning that supports one of my long-held beliefs — that you create your own luck — and I immediately wanted to share it with you.
Whenever someone calls me lucky, it gets under my skin a bit because it sounds so passive. I feel like it devalues the hard work and preparation it takes to be “lucky.” While I acknowledge the fact that I have been given many awesome opportunities in this life, any perceived “luck” was created by the way I used those opportunities.
One example of my “luck” that comes to mind is my relationship with my husband, Dan. Yes, the way I met him was complete serendipity, or luck. But, I took that opportunity and made a conscious decision to develop that chance meeting into something more.
When I met Dan, I had only been separated from my ex-husband, who I had been with for 19 years, for about five months. I could have very easily said, “I’m not ready yet. I don’t want to get hurt again. It’s just too soon,” and walked away from the opportunity that was before me.
Instead, I put in the work, by reading books and seeing a counselor, to make sure I was entering into this relationship with my eyes wide open and making the best decisions I could. I accepted the fact that I might get hurt again. And I had to get over the expectation that it was “too soon.”
That is how I created my own luck in that situation. But here’s the thing, we all have “lucky” things happen to us every day. Unfortunately, if you’re not paying attention, that luck will pass you by. And if you aren’t prepared for the luck or willing to put in the hard work necessary to take advantage of the luck, it’s going to vanish as quickly as it came.
The video I referred to, which features Mel Robbins and Tom Bilyeu, speaks to this point and really resonated with me, and I hope it resonates with you too.

The Video &
Mel's Simple Tip
This video is from Evan Carmichael’s YouTube channel, Morning Motivation. It features Evan’s wife Nina who is filling in for him, so it’s not the typical format you would find on his channel.
Mel’s simple tip: Every night before you go to bed, write down one thing that happened during the day that was good. Why? To train yourself to start to spot the good. Spotting the good is half the equation in creating your own luck. The second half is acting on the opportunities you are presented with.
What good thing happened to you today? Is it an opportunity? How can you act upon it today or tomorrow? Let us know in the comments! Create your own luck!
