Why Did I Practice
Choosing Joy?
I dedicated this week to the practice of choosing joy. In other words, I took the call to action put forth by my guest author, Matt Bain, to heart. In his post, An Inspired Way to Embrace Joy: An Introduction to Delights. he encourages us to journal our Delights. (You’ll have to read that post to find out what that means ?)
And, since I always encourage you to go from inspiration to action at the end of all my full-length posts, I decided I should take my own advice. To take the ideas I’d just learned and Deliberately Thought about and use them to take an action that will get me closer to living the fulfilling life I was meant to live.
Quick plug: I create FREE worksheets to accompany every full-length post to help you go from inspiration to action.
Now, I’d like to inspire you to journal your Delights by sharing my 3 favorite parts of the experience. Because, now that I’ve practiced choosing joy for a week, I’m convinced that this practice is another tool we can use to live the fulfilling life we were meant to live.
My 3 favorite parts of the experience:
- Slowing down and experiencing the moment: One of the rules of writing about your Delights (as introduced by the guru of Delights, Ross Gay), is to do so by hand. I don’t write by hand often because there’s usually some level of efficiency I need to maintain. But I really enjoyed making myself slow down and enjoy the moment — practicing mindfulness if you will.
- Letting go of perfection: I went into every Delight knowing that I was not going to be editing it. There was something about knowing that I wasn’t trying to make the post perfect — I was just trying to express my thoughts and feelings as purely as possible — that was very satisfying.
Keep scrolling to for my favorite part #3.
And My Other
Favorite Part Was . . .
#3 – Letting the piece take on a life of its own. I let go of control. I’d start with one Delight, and it would grow and take detours to places I hadn’t anticipated going, bringing up unexpected thoughts and feelings along the way. Again, I was essentially practicing mindfulness.
I can tell you from first-hand experience that the practice of choosing joy by journaling Delights is a calming and inspiring experience. And, it’s just plain fun!
