Yes, You Can Make an Impact
One Person at a Time
I was born with a strong desire to help people, and I bet you have this desire too.
I’ve heard many thought leaders say things like, “You were born to serve.” And I believe this is true.
Several studies have found that helping people is good for our health and might actually lead to a longer life.
Yet, helping people can feel very overwhelming at times. Sometimes because whomever we are trying to help isn’t ready to be helped yet and resists us. Sometimes because the problem we want to help with seems way too big.
So what do we do? How can we stay motivated to serve? To make an impact, one person at a time.

We have to constantly remind ourselves that we only need to help one person at a time. I know you’ve probably heard this before, but it’s one of those truths that our head knows is true but our heart doesn’t buy into. That’s why it bears repeating, often.
Let’s look at a quick example. I’m trying to help people through my writing. I would love to solve some “big” societal problem, like rising health care costs, but that’s just not in the cards right now. And frankly, I’m not sure that I have the proclivity to ever tackle something of that magnitude.
However, I do have the proclivity to encourage and inspire people through my writing. And it’s possible that the person who has the proclivity to solve the health care problem will run across one of my posts, and something I’ve written will hit them in the right way at the right time. My words will inspire them to take action when they otherwise wouldn’t have.
That’s how helping one person at a time works. What’s your proclivity; what are you good at? How could you use it to help one other person? And how might that impact spread?
You can’t predict the impact of one action, but you can be guaranteed that no action creates no impact.
