3 Simple Meditation Habits You Can Practice Immediately
Implementing simple meditation habits into my daily schedule — this is something that I know I need to do, but I keep putting it off. Yes, I fail to form life-changing habits, just like you do. ?
So I decided today is the day! I’m starting with a 10-minute meditation guide that I stumbled across this week written by Mascha @ My Mindful Universe. Mascha focuses her writing on mindful living, and there’s something about her site that resonates with me. Maybe it’s because mindful living and Deliberate Thinking are really two sides of the same coin. At any rate, her guide seems to be a good first step for me.
Inspired by Mascha’s guide, here are 3 simple meditation habits you can practice immediately:
- Bring your thoughts back to center. When you find your brain going a million miles a minute, jumping from one “Oh, I need to do that” to another, it’s time to come back to center, to the present moment. I learned one effective way to do this from Michael A. Singer. He says to repeat the word Hello in your head over and over again. You will notice that the Hello is coming from somewhere behind your thoughts. That is your center. Keep doing this until there are no other thoughts racing past. I have done this before, and it definitely helped me.
- Become grounded. Get comfortable. Close your eyes, and picture yourself in peaceful surroundings. Count to five as you breathe in, and envision yourself breathing in new energy. Exhale, and envision yourself breathing out old, stagnant energy or whatever thoughts you are trying to release.
- Focus on your breathing. This is a super simple habit that you can perform anytime and anywhere. This will bring you back to center and calm your thoughts. Make sure your shoulders are drawn back so you can get a good, deep breath in. Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, repeat. This is often referred to as box breathing, and it is used by yogis and the military alike.
