What's Silencing Your Intuition?
Recognize the 3 Levels of Consciousness
We have a strange relationship with our intuition, don’t we? It’s probably our biggest ally, yet we often do our best to silence it. We cast it aside to remain lost somewhere within our levels of consciousness.
So how do you start listening to your intuition? How do you stop silencing it so it can do its job — solving problems for you? You start by gaining an understanding of your 3 levels of consciousness! So that’s what we’re going to do today.
Psychologists and neuroscientists tend to agree that our brains operate on three levels of consciousness, or awareness:
- The Conscious Mind contains your individual awareness of your unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations, and environments (definition from Verywell Mind).
- The Subconscious Mind is the part of your brain that holds the information you can easily bring into your awareness when it is needed or wanted. For example, you can pull your phone number into your conscious mind when someone asks for it, but it’s not something you’re always aware of.

The 3rd Level of Consciousness
Where Your Intuition Resides
- The Unconscious Mind is in charge of your body’s automatic actions and responses, such as your heart beating normally (action) or your heart racing when you are frightened (response). It’s also in charge of all the information that is not readily available to be brought into consciousness.
Okay, but what does all of this have to do with your intuition? And learning to trust your intuition? To answer these questions, we need to define intuition. According to Oxford Languages:
[Your intuition is] the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning
Which means that your intuition resides in your unconscious mind.
But, how do you use this knowledge to stop silencing your intuition? We’ll answer that question in the full-length post that inspired this one: Why Learning to Trust Your Intuition Will Set You Free. It includes a FREE worksheet that will encourage you to sort through all of the information presented and go from inspiration to action.

- Conscious mind = The information you’re currently aware of.
- Subconscious mind = The information you’re not currently aware of but that can be easily accessed when wanted or needed.
- Unconscious = The information you’re completely unaware of; your automatic actions and responses; and the information that is not easily accessed.
