Yes, You Can Cultivate a
Positive Perspective
You don’t get to choose whether or not bad things happen. You don’t get to decide when life’s going to deliver that one-two punch that knocks you down. But, you do get to choose your perspective, and you can choose to have a positive perspective.
I’m not saying it’s an easy thing to do. I’m not saying you don’t have a right to feel sorry for yourself, mourn your losses, or ask, “Why me?” Do all of those things, but then choose to ask, “What’s one silver lining I can find in this situation? What can I learn from this?”
Who am I to make such statements? I’m someone who’s been knocked to the ground plenty of times, and I’ve always gotten back up, quickly and stronger than before. Life has given me many opportunities to adopt a negative perspective, but I have chosen not to take them.
Even when I’m feeling sorry for myself, mourning my losses, and asking, “Why me?”, in the back of my mind I’m always finding silver linings.
I’m fortunate enough to have been born with a positive perspective, and I’m even more fortunate that it was nurtured by a special woman in my life. Maybe you’re not as fortunate, but I still believe you can cultivate a positive perspective.

The Special Woman With a
Positive Perspective
How do you cultivate a positive perspective? Find someone who has one and spend as much time with them as you can. Or, find a thought leader (Evan Carmichael, Mel Robbins, Gary Vee, etc.) you can relate to and consume as much of their content as you can. By doing so, you are training your brain to find silver linings.
The special woman who nurtured my positive perspective was my grandma, or Gram, as I called her. I can remember thinking, when I was young, “I don’t know how this woman is so calm, content, and positive all the time? She has so many reasons not to be.” And I knew I wanted to be like her.
Gram suffered many tragedies in her life. Her twin sister died of tuberculosis when they were in their early 20’s; not too long after, her father was instantly killed when his car was hit by a train; and later, her youngest daughter died of a massive heart attack when she was only 39 years old.
I thought for sure the death of my aunt was going to break Gram, but nope! She even came back from that with her ever-present positive perspective and grace.
Who’s the Gram in your life? When you find negativity creeping in, think about that person, and draw inspiration from how they choose to react to life’s one-two punches.
