3 Reasons You Resist Change
And Personal Growth
You resist change. Even when it’s positive change. Even when that change could lead to personal growth. Even when resisting change is as good as self-sabotage.
It sounds ludicrous, right? Why would anyone in their right mind resist change when it could make their life better? Yet, we all do it. I keep catching myself doing it today. You must be too, or you wouldn’t be reading this. ?
And, because you’re reading this, I know there’s something you want to be better at tomorrow than you are today. I know that you want to experience personal growth. And, I know that you’re facing at least one of these barriers to growth (psst . . . I’m facing them too).
So take a minute to examine these tendencies in yourself. This self-awareness will empower you to acknowledge and accept your barriers so you can move past them.
- Fear of the unknown. Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. I think we can agree that most, if not all, people have some fear of the unknown. And, whenever you make a change, you are heading into unknown territory. So, sometimes you resist change because you’d rather remain in familiar territory even if a better you resides in the unknown; even if it means you’ll have to settle for an unfulfilling life.
- Apprehension of loss. You don’t fear losing pain and misery, right? Because there’s nothing of value to lose. But, when you embrace change and invest in your personal growth, what you’re really doing is creating something of value — something that can be lost. Having something of value to lose can be scary, and when we’re scared we resist change.
Keep scrolling for the third barrier to growth — the one that you don’t want to admit to yourself.
The Third Barrier to Growth
That You Don't Want to Admit To
#3 – Fixation on drama and excuses. The truth is, we’re all prone to fixating on our own drama and maybe even relishing in our own misfortunes a bit. Why? I’m sure a psychologist could rattle off a list of reasons, but I can think of two. (1) Our drama draws attention from others, even if it’s bad attention. And, (2) whatever hardship we’re dealing with gives us a built in excuse to resist change and personal growth.
Do any of these barriers to growth sound familiar to you? If so, that’s actually a great thing! Because now that you’ve gained some self-awareness, you’ll be much more likely to notice when you’re hiding behind one of them. Then, you can intentionally choose to accept and embrace whatever changes have come your way.
