Overcome Impostor Syndrome
in the Moment
We’ve all experienced impostor syndrome, right? So we all know that it can stop you dead in your tracks. That’s why it’s important to figure out how to overcome impostor syndrome the moment that it hits.
I’ll share my approach for overcoming impostor syndrome with you, in the hopes that you can draw inspiration from it. But first, let’s make sure our understanding of impostor syndrome is the same. This is how I think of it.
You get a brilliant idea. You’re super energized by it. You can’t wait to get started. But then, suddenly, you think to yourself, “This will never work. No one’s going to buy this idea. What do I know about this anyway? Who am I to bring this idea into the world?”
You go on to tell yourself that you don’t have the right credentials, you’re not charismatic enough, you’re not respected enough, and on and on — until you abandon your brilliant idea as quickly as it came.
Those thoughts, my friends, are impostor syndrome at work. But, I still haven’t defined impostor syndrome. According to Psychology Today:
People who struggle with imposter syndrome believe that they are undeserving of their achievements. They feel that they aren’t as competent or intelligent as others might think—and that soon enough, people will discover the truth about them. Those with imposter syndrome are often well accomplished; they may hold high office or have numerous academic degrees.
Sound familiar? Then let’s figure out how to shift your mindset away from these thoughts.

My Approach for
Overcoming Impostor Syndrome
Think of your favorite song(s). Your favorite song probably includes vocals, drums, and guitars. Millions of songs that include vocals, drums, and guitars were written before your favorite. And there are possibly millions of songs with the same theme as your favorite — love, heartbreak, or struggle of some kind.
Yet, your favorite song spoke to you in a different way. There’s something unique about the composition of the vocals, drums, and guitars. Maybe there’s something special about the lyrics or the delivery of the lyrics.
Whatever draws you to this song, the fact is that the artists who created it are “impostors” in that they didn’t do anything new. But, they created something that only they could create. No one else can deliver the song in the same way.
The same is true for you. Of course others have done whatever it is you want to do. Of course there are plenty of people who are better at it. That doesn’t matter. There’s still something about the way you will tackle the task that will be different and will speak to someone in a way that none of those people can.
Remember this when you are faced with impostor syndrome, and you will overcome it in the moment.
