Remarkable Leaders Create a Vision
and So Can You
The first person you need to lead is yourself. Yes, we’ve heard a variation of this adage a million times — the old put your oxygen mask on first analogy — but we’ve heard it a million times for a reason. Because it’s true.
And the most effective way to lead yourself is to create a vision for your life and a vision of what you want the world to look like. How the heck can you be a remarkable leader if you haven’t clearly defined what you want to lead people toward?
I’m sure there are countless ways to create a vision — I’ll offer 3 effective steps in a bit here — but, above all, you need to make sure your vision is your own. You can’t photocopy someone else’s vision or base your vision on what you think people expect of you.
Creating a vision that is unique to you is going to be a difficult process, no doubt, but it will be worth the effort. Once you have a vision for your life, you can create a vision for how you will use your natural talents and abilities to serve others.
That’s when you’ll really become a remarkable leader — when you have a clear vision of what you want your life to look like and a clear vision of how you can serve others. You will inspire others to follow you, and they will support your vision.
So how do you get there?

3 Effective Steps to
Create a Vision
- Start by naming your core values. Your core values are the core of who you are, by definition. They never change, even though your preferences, interests, attitudes, and behaviors do. So it only makes sense that you have to know what your core values are before you can create a vision that is authentic to you. (Click here if you could use a hand naming your core values).
- Then, identify specific areas in your life that you want to improve and develop. Going through this exercise will help you identify what’s important to you, which will help you create a vision for what you want the (your) world to look like. (Click here if you could use a hand with this exercise).
- Next, make a decision to take action toward your vision. You’re probably not going to believe in your vision very much if you can’t see a road to getting there. If you don’t believe in your vision 100%, there’s no way you’ll be able to lead anyone else toward it. And, the only way that road is going to become clear is by taking that first step; by taking action. (Click here if you could use a hand with making effective decisions).
